Screenwriters I Love: Kazuo Ishiguro

My 2023 #LauraAtTheMovies journey is a list of screenwriters I love and why they inspire me as a writer, competition juror, and fan.

Screenwriter: Kazuo Ishiguro

Best Known For: Living, The Remains of the Day

Awards & Nominations:

2 wins & 12 nominations, most recently, Academy Award and BAFTA nominations for Best Adapted Screenplay (Living).

He's been highly honored by Britain, France, and Japan. He was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire for services to literature (1995), Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government (1998), Order of the Rising Sun, 2nd Class, Gold and Silver Star by the Japanese government (2018) and appointed Knight Bachelor for services to literature (2018).

He has won countless literary awards including a NOBEL PRIZE in literature in 2017. No biggie.

About the writer: Kazuo Ishiguro is a Japanese-British novelist, best known for The Remains of the Day, which was turned into a feature film in 1993. His most recent novel-to-screenplay adaptation, Living, made him the third Nobel prize winner to be nominated for an Oscar. He's written numerous novels and short stories, all to worldwide acclaim.

Why I love their work: He is one of THE storytellers of our time. Hands down. When other writers are asked about their favorite writer, they always mention him. If you haven't read his books, run to your nearest library or bookstore. Then watch movie versions of The Remains of the Day and Living. Trust me.

Sometimes I'm serious, sometimes I'm silly. Any scripts referenced are for educational purposes only. (My lawyer made me say that part.)
