June 2021 #100screenplays

Happy Pride Month!

Who's back out in the world? I've been having fun doing a mix of zoom and live comedy. It sure feels good to hear live audiences laugh again. Of course, I'm most happy about being able to give out #freemomhugs again.

I recently completed a Roadmap Writers Incubator with a comedy exec (virtual), and it was so worth it. If you're not familiar with Roadmap Writers, they're a fantastic place for screenwriters and authors at every level and budget. There are tons of free webinars, as well as workshops and career coaching opportunities with showrunners, producers, literary managers, and development professionals. My specific comedy guy was fantastic. His feedback was encouraging, high level, and consistently helped me improve my current project from week to week.

Big congratulations to several friends and colleagues who've recently been staffed in writers rooms, pitched to Netflix, placed in screenwriting contests, and kept their momentum going no matter what. And special congratulations to my husband for winning a screenplay contest!

Here's my comedy binge for June.

  1. The Family Man
  2. Field of Dreams
  3. 48 HRS
  4. The Fifth Element
  5. Forrest Gump
  6. Fight Club
  7. Jerry Maguire
  8. Good Will Hunting
  9. Funny People
  10. Finding Nemo
  11. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

#100Screenplays 2021 reading challenge by the numbers:

Total yet-to be produced scripts: 22

Total produced scripts: 68

2021 Grand total: 90

My thoughts:

It's been fun to read/re-read these. It may seem like this list is all over the place but look closer. Most of them have something in common: a mismatched pair. The incongruency of an unlikely pair of buddies or potential lovers is a foundation in comedy. The two characters can't help but poke each other's wounds and cause change for each other. Add in their biases (optimism, pessimism, class, race, gender, sunk cost, anchoring, etc) and you've got a recipe for inspiring change through humor.

Keep writing friends,

Sometimes I'm serious, sometimes I'm silly. Any scripts referenced are for educational purposes only. (My lawyer made me say that part.)
