How it started:
I have a confession. I’ve pretty much stopped reading books. In 2018, I happily accepted a friend’s invitation to join a small, private reading group. We were supposed to post when we’d read a book from various categories: a new book, a new author, a favorite author, a certain genre, etc. but at the end of the year, I’d posted twice. TWO books. How could that be accurate? I felt like I was reading ALL. THE. TIME. Then I realized… I’d switched to reading screenplays!
What I read in 2018:
A Few Good Men A Star is Born (1976) A Star is Born (2018) American Beauty Back to the Future Ballad of Buster Scruggs Battle of the Sexes The Big Sick Bladerunner The Bourne Identity Bridesmaids Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid Call Me By Your Name Casablanca Dallas Buyers Club The Dark Knight Dead Poets Society Deadpool DiehardEdward Scissorhands Eighth Grade Fight Club Flight Get Out The Girl on a Train The Godfather Groundhog Day | The Hangover Hell or High Water Hidden Figures I, Tonya Indiana Jones & the Raiders of the Lost Ark Ladybird Leave No Trace Logan Mary Queen of Scots The Matrix Molly’s Game Mudbound Princess Bride Schindler’s List Scrooged Shakespeare in Love The Shape of Water Silence of the Lambs Sixth Sense Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, MO Training Day Trumbo 12 Angry Men (1957) 12 Angry Men (1997) Twilight West Wing (pilot) When Harry Met Sally |
I read scripts as a juror for two international competitions, as well as for screenwriting colleagues. This brought my totals for 2018 to over 100 scripts!
Total yet-to be produced scripts: 48
Total produced scripts: 54
Grand total: 102
What I learned:
A good script can be a bad movie if the other collaborators (producer, director, casting, actors, editor, sound, marketing, etc) screw it up somehow. A bad script is rarely a good movie.
