Screenwriters I Love: Ron Bass

My 2023 #LauraAtTheMovies journey is a list of screenwriters I love and why they inspire me as a writer, competition juror, and fan.

Screenwriter: Ron Bass

Best Known For: Rain Man, My Best Friend’s Wedding, What Dreams May Come, The Joy Luck Club, Stepmom, How Stella Got Her Groove Back, Waiting to Exhale, Dangerous Minds, When a Man Loves a Woman, Sleeping with the Enemy, Snow Falling on Cedars

Awards & Nominations:

4 Wins – 1989 Oscar for Best Screenplay (Rain Man), 1998 ShoWest Screenwriter of the Year, 2003 Ojai Film Festival Lifetime Achievement Award, 2003 Hollywood Film Award for Outstanding Achievement in Screenwriting.

9 Nominations – 1989/1990 Rain Man: WGA Best Screenplay, Golden Globe Best Screenplay, David di Donatello Best Foreign Screenplay, BAFTA Best Screenplay. 1994/1995 The Joy Luck Club: WGA Best Adapted Screenplay, USC Scripter, BAFTA Best Adapted Screenplay. 1998 My Best Friend’s Wedding: Golden Satellite Award Best Comedy, OFTA Film Award Best Comedy

About the writer: Ron Bass has been told NO a lot but keeps going! He wrote unproduced screenplay drafts for The Bridges of Madison County, The Shipping News, and Memoirs of a Geisha. He started writing at age 6, gave up after some negative feedback from a high school teacher. Started again at age 32, while working as an attorney. He kept at it until he became a screenwriter at 42. He’s currently 80, has over a dozen projects in development, and still writes daily.

Why I love their work: Anyone who gets Julia Roberts cast in not one, not two, but three of their projects is doing something right. Chances are you’ve seen more than one of his films, and there’s a moment in each of them that won’t let you go. My favorites are What Dreams May Come, When A Man Loves a Woman, and Stepmom. Each of them has quotable lines that I love.

Go watch his back catalog so you'll be ready when one of his new projects releases!

Sometimes I'm serious, sometimes I'm silly. Any scripts referenced are for educational purposes only. (My lawyer made me say that part.)
